In yet another blow to the Trump campaigns attempts to prove election fraud, a judge in Pennsylvania has thrown out an attempt to invalidate mail-in ballots.
We never thought wed say this at Buzz.ie, but the US president really does reek of desperation right now, doesnt he?
In what has become a rather baffling display to both US-based and international onlookers, the Trump campaign is still relentlessly attempting to overturn the US election result. The campaigns attempts to substantiate their wholly unsubstantiated claims that one-term US President Donald Trump had the election stolen from him has been, so far, broadly unsuccessful.
Just recently, it was announced that the Trump campaign had shelled out $3m for re-counts in two particularly liberal-leaning counties in Wisconsin in the hopes of reversing his loss by more than 20,000 votes in the state.
Yesterday, some Wisconsin officials even accused Trump-supporting poll watchers of obstructing the recount efforts by flouting rules, constantly objecting to every ballot pulled and incessantly peppering ballot counters with questions and comments.
Also yesterday, the Trump campaign requested a second recount in the state of Georgia, even after a thorough hand-counted audit of the presidential ballots completed recently failed to overturn Bidens win in the state. (This second recount, done through machine scanners, will be funded by the taxpayers of the state of Georgia, the majority of whom voted for Biden.)
It is worth considering too that, even setting aside the quibbles over the USs unusual electoral college system and how that is influencing where the Trump campaign is focusing its efforts, US President-elect Joe Biden still won the popular vote by almost 5m votes.
So, on to the latest development: Pennsylvania. Its a typical story now; the Trump campaign files a lawsuit to attempt to overturn a Biden victory. The judge grills the Trump campaign on the details in court. It emerges that the lawsuit has little to no evidence. The lawsuit is then rejected.
In Pennsylvania, the Trump campaign tried to argue that millions of votes in Pennsylvania should be invalidated because some counties incorrectly allowed voters to fix their ballots in the event that they made an error.
US District Court Judge Matthew Brann ruled that the lawsuit was unsupported by evidence and called the remedy suggested by the Trump team unhinged.
Brann wrote: This Court has been presented with strained legal arguments without merit and speculative accusations. In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state.
In a response, Trump campaign lawyer Rudy Giuliani claimed that the censorship continues and pledged to appeal the ruling.
A Republican senator for the state of Pennsylvania, Pat Toomey, has said that Trump has exhausted all plausible legal options and called on the sitting president to concede his loss.
Toomey praised Judge Brann as a longtime conservative Republican whom I know to be a fair and unbiased jurist.
The outcome of the vote in the state of Pennsylvania is set to be certified on Monday. The Democratic campaign has issued a scathing statement in response to the latest Trump loss, saying that it further proves that his accusations are baseless.
Our country will not tolerate Trumps attempt to reverse the results of an election that he decisively lost, said Biden spokesman Michael Gwin in a statement.
