ASTI tells its teachers not to work on Leaving Cert grades until legal issue resolved

Further uncertainty surrounds the Leaving Cert calculated grades system as theAssociation of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) has rejected legal protection being offered to teachers asfalling far short of what is required".

The news comes after the Attorney General and Cabinet signed off on a legal indemnity for teachers and schools in the event of students attempting to take legal challenges based on the grades they receive.

This followed discussion on the calculated grades system which has been announced as a replacement for the Leaving Cert exams.

The other teachers union, the TUI, has welcomed the indemnity measures but the ASTI has raised concerns that it could lead topersonal liabilities for costs for second level teachers.

The ASTI said this "position is unacceptable".

The ASTI said it would continue to work with the Department of Education.

However, in the meantime it is advisingmembers not to undertake any work on the process until this issue is resolved".
