Elderly couple found dead in Donegal may have died in freak double accident

Garda are investigating if an elderly couple found dead at their home in Co Donegal this week died in a freak double accident.

The bodies of Patrick Doherty (85) and his wife Margaret (76) were found at their home in Convoy, east Donegal, on Wednesday afternoon.

The alarm was raised by a relative of the couple at 1.30pm.

The married couple, who were very well-known in the area, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The bodies were removed from the house and post-mortems are due to take place at Letterkenny University Hospital.

Garda believe the couple may have died from injuries as a result of separate falls in their bedroom, according to theIrish News.

Garda said that the course of their investigation into the "sudden deaths" will be determined by the results of the post-mortems.

The main line of inquiry being investigated is whether Mrs Doherty hit her head in a fall before Mr Doherty also suffered a fall while trying to help her.

The Irish Independent report that there was no sign of trauma to the couple and there were also no indications of a break-in to the terraced home on the outskirts of the village.

The couplereturned to Ireland around 15 years ago after living for decades in England, where Mr Doherty worked in the construction industry.
