Flight with 149 passengers, eight crew members crashes on way to Nairobi

An Ethiopian Airlines flight carrying 149 passengers has crashedon its way to Nairobi, the Ethiopian prime ministers office said.

A spokesperson for the airline said to Reuters that there were also eight crew members on board the flight.

The spokesperson said:"It is confirmed it happened 8.44 (am)."

The EthiopianPrime Minister said the flight was a Boeing 737 and that it was a regularlyscheduled flight.

Flight ET 302 crashed near the town ofBishoftu which is 62 kilometres southeast of thecapital Addis Ababa, the airline also confirmed.

The statement from the airline said: "search and rescue operations are in progress and we have no confirmed information about survivors or any possible casualties".

The Prime Minister released a statement on his official Twitter account and expressed hiscondolences to families of those lost in an Ethiopian airline's flight.

He said:"The office of the PM, on behalf of government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it's deepest condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning."
