Joey Barton not a fan of Declan Rice's 'strange' international switch

West Ham star Declan Rices switch from the Republic of Ireland to England is a strange one, according to formerManchester Citystar Joey Barton.

The 20-year-old was called up to the England squad this week for theEuro 2020 qualifiers.

Rice made headlines last month with his decision to change nationality from Ireland.

The London-born midfielder played for the Boys in Green at underage level before winning three senior international caps but qualified for England as they were all friendly appearances.

This has sparked afurious debateon switching nationalities.

And Barton, who currently manages Fleetwood Town, was critical of the 20-year-olds decision.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show at Cheltenham, he said: Its a strange one, the Declan Rice one.

Rice was called up to the England squad for the first time since his international switch

I think once youve made your bed you have to lie in it.

If youve played for Ireland, youre either Irish or English.

I think its quite a straightforward decision.

But the 36-year-old went on to praise the midfielders talent.

Barton added: For me, I think hes a quality player without a shadow of a doubt.

Theres a lot of Irish people here at Cheltenham, so Ill keep my voice down.

But playing for England gives you more chance of winning a major competition.
