Man arrested as 27 animals rescued from 'shocking' conditions in Kilkenny


A man has been arrested and a number of dogs and horses seized following a search by members of An Garda Siochna of a premises in Co. Kilkenny this week..


The search took place on Monday (November 30) in Callan as part of a multi agency operation involving An Garda Siochana, KSPCA, KK CoCo, MLHR, local Veterinary Surgeon, and Dog rescues.


During the search, Garda found a total of 23 dogs and four horses kept in terrible conditions which gardai say were "serious breaches" of the Animal Welfare Act.




The animals were seized over concerns for their welfare

The animals, which included lurchers, terriers and greyhounds, were seized under Welfare grounds. All the animals have been rehomed with animal welfare organisations.


A full investigation into serious breaches of the 2013 Animal Welfare Act is underway.


According to a statement from Garda, one man who was present at the scene was arrested under suspicion of attempting to obstructing the search of the premises. He is being detained at Kilkenny Garda Station and a file is being prepared for the DPP.


Taking to social media following the incident, Garda based in the Kilkenny/Carlow region said: As part of a planned search under Warrant contrary to the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, Gardai and Detectives from Unit B Kilkenny searched a premises in Callan today.

"This was a multi agency operation involving An Garda Sochna, KSPCA [Kilkenny Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals], Kilkenny County Council, My Lovely Horse Rescue, local veterinary surgeon, and dog rescues.


One male who is alleged to have obstructed the search was arrested at the scene and later charged to appear at Kilkenny District Court.


A full investigation into serious breaches of the 2013 Animal Welfare Act is underway.

A spokesperson for My Lovely Horse, who assisted in the rescue, said: "Today was shockingly sad, 5 MLHR volunteers assisted the amazing Kilkenny Garda with their animal welfare operation...poor animals in a shocking state.


"Our Co. founder Debs cried, we see so much sadness but to see the state these poor animals existed in was just horrible."
