Man shot during incident with armed gardaí in Mallow, Cork

Two men were arrested at a checkpoint in Mallow, County Cork, where one shot was discharged by a garda firearm.

The incident occurred at approximately 8.30pm atSpa, Mitchelstown Road, Mallow.

It's understood the man suffered a non life threatening injury to his shoulder.

Reports suggest the driver of the car failed to stop and was driving at a garda when a member of the Armed Support Unit discharged the weapon.

A Garda spokeswoman said: "Garda in Mallow are currently at scene of an incident that occurred this evening Thursday 21st May, 2020 at approximately 8.30p.m at Spa, Mitchelstown Road, Mallow when a Garda firearm discharged one single shot.

"Garda are investigating all the circumstances of this incident, at this time. Two men have been arrested and are currently detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at Mallow Garda station.

"Garda Sochna Ombudsman Commission have been notified and are at the scene of the incident and will conduct their investigation into the discharge of a Garda firearm."
