Meet The Former College Dropout And Bouncer Who Could Be The World's Smartest Person

Picture the world's most brilliant mind. Do you see them conducting lab experiments, solving complex mathematical problems on a blackboard, or leading a corporate meeting? Christopher Langan, often called America's smartest man, fits none of these stereotypes.

From an early age, despite growing up in poverty, Langan exhibited extraordinary intelligence. His IQ ranks among the highest ever measured. Yet, you won't find him lecturing at prestigious universities or running major scientific institutions. Instead, this "smartest man in the world" leads a serene life managing a horse ranch.

The Rough Childhood Of The 'Smartest Man In The World'

Christopher Michael Langan was born on March 25, 1952, and displayed remarkable intellectual abilities early on. He began speaking at six months and reading by age three. By five, he was already contemplating the existence of God.

"It was simply recognized that I was some kind of kid genius," Langan said. "My schoolmates saw me as the teacher's pet, this little freak."

Langan's early life was marked by abuse. His mother's boyfriend, Jack, regularly subjected him and his two half-brothers to physical violence.

"Living with him was like ten years of boot camp," Langan recalled, "only at boot camp you don't get the s**t beaten out of you every day with a garrison belt, and in boot camp, you're not living in abject poverty."

Despite these hardships, Langan's academic prowess shone brightly. By age 12, he had mastered everything his public school had to offer and turned to independent study, already hinting at his future title as the "smartest person in the world."

Langan possessed an exceptional ability to absorb new languages simply by glancing through textbooks. He famously scored perfectly on the SAT, remarkably even after dozing off during the exam.

In addition to his intellectual activities, Langan also focused on physical fitness. At 14, when Jack attempted to attack him one morning, Langan defended himself and expelled Jack from their home permanently, though Jack has denied the allegations of abuse.

Christopher Langan soon set his sights on higher education, but he would quickly learn that high intelligence did not guarantee success in the real world for someone often dubbed the smartest person alive.

The Limits Of Christopher Langan's Intelligence

Langan enrolled at Reed College with plans to study mathematics and philosophy, but his academic journey was cut short when his mother neglected to sign a form that would have secured him a full scholarship, forcing him to drop out.

He then attended Montana State University, but his time there was brief. Langan later recounted conflicts with a math professor and car issues that frequently prevented him from attending classes.

"I just figured, Hey, I need this like a moose needs a hat rack!" Langa said. "I could literally teach these people more than they could teach me… to this day, I have no respect for academics. I call them acadummies."

Ultimately, Langan moved east and took on various roles including cowboy, construction worker, forest service firefighter, fitness trainer, and bouncer. By his 40s, despite his intellect, he was earning just $6,000 a year.

Despite his varied and sometimes challenging life circumstances, Christopher Langan's intellectual pursuits never ceased. In his spare time, he endeavored to decipher the mysteries of the universe, creating what he terms the "Cognition-Theoretic Model of the Universe," or CTMU.

"It includes physics and the natural sciences, but it also goes to a level above. A level on which you can talk about the entirety of science," Langan explained, noting that CTMU could prove the existence of God.

However, Langan remains skeptical about the academic acceptance of his work. He believes that his lack of formal academic qualifications may prevent his theories from being published or taken seriously.

Christopher Langan: The 'Smartest Man Alive' Today

Despite a 20/20 report verifying his IQ as being between 195 and 210—far above the average of around 100—Langan continues to lead a modest life, largely unrecognized by the academic community.

Today, he and his wife live on a horse ranch in Mercer, Missouri, where they enjoy a peaceful, rural lifestyle. "Nobody knows anything about my IQ because I don't tell them," Langan explained.

Langan continues to stimulate both his intellect and that of others. In 1999, he and his wife established the Mega Foundation, a nonprofit organization designed to facilitate idea-sharing among highly intelligent individuals outside the conventional academic environment.

Langan has also been involved in some contentious issues. He subscribes to 9/11 conspiracy theories, believing the attacks were orchestrated to divert attention from his CTMU theory, and supports the white replacement theory. An article in The Baffler once described him as "Alex Jones with a thesaurus."

When it comes to his own prodigious intellect, Christopher Langan views it philosophically. He considers intelligence just one aspect of life's broader tapestry, marked by both good and bad fortune. In his view, he simply happens to possess an extraordinary mental capacity.

"Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to be ordinary," he admitted. "Not that I'd trade. I just wonder sometimes."
