The music mogul broke his back in several places after falling off his electric bike

The X Factor creator Simon Cowell has broken his silence following a six-hour surgery as a result of breaking his back in several places.

The music mogul was hospitalised after falling off his electric bike in the courtyard of his home in Malibu, California.

According to reports, Cowell narrowly avoided paralysis from the fall.

A source told The Mirror: "He fell flat on his back and the doctors say the impact missed his spinal cord by about a centimetre and it could have been a lot, lot more serious."

Cowell is said to be recovering after his surgery in hospital where he will stay for the next few days.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Some good advice...

"If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back.

"Thank you to everyone for your kind messages."

In a separate post, he thanked hospital staff for looking after him.

He added: "And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met.

"Stay safe everyone. Simon."

A source had previously said: Simon has broken his back and will be having surgery this evening.

Simon had a fall from his bike on Saturday afternoon whilst testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family.

"He hurt his back and was taken to the hospital. He's doing fine, he's under observation and is in the best possible hands."
