Simon Cowell had spine 'smashed to pieces' in horror bike accident

Simon Cowell insists the accident that broke his back almost smashed his spine to pieces but insists he now feels better than before the injury.

The X Factor and Britains Got Talent boss (61) faced six hours of emergency surgery last year following a bike accident and has kept a low profile since.

But appearing on the Extra TV show in the US and speaking about the incident for the first time, Simon Cowell said: It could have been a lot worse.

When I saw the X-ray, I really nearly could have smashed my spine to pieces, so I literally wouldnt have been able to walk.

I knew Id broken my back the minute I landed. It was really, really kind of sudden and it hurt.

Reflecting on how the moment had changed his life, Simon said that without partner Lauren Silverman and son Erics unwavering support and care he couldnt have got through it with the accident even bringing them closer as a family.

He added: Ive never been in this situation in my life where you literally cant move. The pain was off the charts But youve got to stay positive.

I made a promise to myself Id be fitter than I was before I had the accident. Sure enough, thats what happened.

He said the worst part of his ordeal was the fear of embarrassing himself in front of his seven-year-old son Eric.

Simon Cowell Screws

He said: I was so embarrassed about coming home looking about 100 [years old] because I couldnt walk, and I have these metal rods in my back and these screws. I said, Lauren, I just dont know how to explain it to [Eric].

She obviously said something to him because he came in and I was lying in bed and he said, daddy, youre like Iron Man, and I thought that was the sweetest thing and it meant a lot.
