Donald Trump reportedly labelled Haiti, El Salvador and African nations "shithole countries" during a meeting of a bipartisan group of senators on Thursday.
He grew frustrated when senators discussed the nations as part of an immigration deal before exclaiming:Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?
The Washington Post, who first reported the story, claim he asked why they didn't have more immigrants from countries like Norway.
Trump singled out Haiti. According to sources who attended the meeting, he said:Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out."
The senators in attendance were "taken aback" by the president's comments.
A White House official defended Trump's immigration policy but did not dispute The Post's account.
Immigration has been a key issue for Trump during his election campaign and presidency.
He has pledged to cut legal immigration by half while he infamously promised a 'Great Wall' along the Mexican border.
The construction of the wall is still no closer to being realised despite Trump's best efforts.
