Two reported dead and 8 injured following Madrid gas explosion


Two people have been reported dead so far following a gas explosion in Madrid according to the city's mayor.


Initial reports following the explosion have linked the incident to a gas leak in a building next to a home for the elderly.

The collapsed building was a religious complex for residential training of priests and provides meals for the city's homeless.


The La Paloma residence released a statement on their website this afternoon to report that no one in the home had been injured.


They also confirmed that a search is underway for a member of their volunteer team.

They wrote: "The priests who live on the fifth and sixth floors are fine.


"We are trying to locate a volunteer who works with us."


One person is being treated for serious injuries in the aftermath of the explosion, while seven others suffered minor injuries.

Madrid's emergency services took to Twitter to confirm that "at least four floors have been affected by the explosion in the building in Calle Toledo."


Fire crews, alongside 11 ambulances are at the scene, which remains closed off to the public.
