Hollywood star Johnny Depp looks very different while filming a new movie with Penélope Cruz.

The 61-year-old actor works on the film in Spain and was seen with gray hair, a gray beard, and blue contact lenses. He was dressed in a suit and holding a glass in the first look at his new thriller, Day Drinker. Marc Webb directs the movie and also stars Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline as a bartender on a private yacht who becomes friends with a guest named Kelly, played by Johnny.

The two characters soon get caught up with a criminal, played by Penélope Cruz, and uncover some surprising connections. Day Drinker is the fourth movie Johnny and Penélope have worked on together, after starring in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.

This is also Johnny's first big role in an American movie since his defamation trial with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, in 2022. In the trial, the jury agreed with Johnny and decided that Amber had hurt his reputation in a Washington Post article about domestic violence, even though she didn't mention his name. After some back-and-forth appeals, the case ended later that year with both sides agreeing to settle.

Day Drinker director Marc, who also worked on the live-action Snow White movie with Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, said, "I'm excited to be starting production with Johnny, Madelyn, Penelope, and this incredible cast. We're in a beautiful location with a fantastic crew and a thrilling, ferocious story to tell. This is going to be fun."

The movie is being made by Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who also produce the John Wick movies for Lionsgate, along with Adam Kolbrenner, who worked on The Tomorrow War, Free Guy, and Prisoners, and Zach Dean, who wrote the original script. Day Drinker is also executive produced by 30West.

In September, Johnny and Penélope went to the San Sebastian Film Festival together, where Johnny showed his film Modi, The Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which he directed. At a press conference, Johnny seemed to hint at his defamation trial while talking about how he related to the movie's main character, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

"Each has their story. Sure, we can say that I've been through a number of things here and there," Johnny explained during the conference. "I think we've all been through a number of things, ultimately. Maybe yours wasn't, didn't turn into a soap opera, televised, in fact."

Even though Day Drinker is expected to be Johnny's big return, he also starred in the French movie Jeanne Du Barry, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and was released in the U.S. in May 2024. Another project Johnny is working on besides Day Drinker is the animated film Johnny Puff: Secret Mission. Amber now lives a quiet life in Madrid, Spain, with her daughter Oonagh Paige after her legal battle with Johnny.
