Hey Strands heads! I’m back, and Strands today had me confused throughout. While it wasn’t my day, I would wish for it to be better for you. So, here’s a curated list of hints and answers for the May 17 NYT Strands!
What is the Theme for Today’s NYT Strands?
As revealed by the New York Times, the theme for today’s Strands is “Looking for a mate”. Is it about dating apps? I don’t why but, that’s the first thing that came to my head.

Every Strands game has that one Spangram that you need to decipher and today’s was no exception. The hint for today’s Spangram is – “Bluetooth devices are ready to ____”.
Theme Words Hints for Today’s Strands
If you have figured out the Spangram from the above hint, figuring out the theme words will be easy. However, I don’t want to ruin it for you. Instead, here are three theme word hints that may help you:

The Spangram for today’s NYT Strands puzzle is PAIRED, and it runs from left to right on the letters grid.

List of Theme Words for NYT Strands on May 17
If you have scrolled this far, you are probably ready to see the answers. So, let’s take a look at today’s theme words in Strands:
- PLIER
- MITTEN
- EARPLUG
- CHOPSTICK
- BOOKEND
- TONG
- WING
After looking for apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and not finding them in the grids, I realized I was thinking wrong. After a while, I unintentionally stumbled upon PLIER at the top right. Then, right beside it, I found CHOPSTICK. In the middle, there was MITTEN, but I still couldn’t figure out the theme today.
At the bottom left, there was TONG, and beside it, WING. The bottom left side housed EARPLUG. However, I couldn’t figure out the next theme words, and had to use a hint to get BOOKEND. That led me to unveil PAIRED as the Spangram for the day.
