“Snow White” Banned in Lebanon Over Its Lead Star

The situation with Disney’s Snow White continues to get more and more poisonous. The film has already been deemed a box office failure, having made only $180 million against a $250 million budget after a month in theaters. Now, the film is banned thanks to one of its lead stars – and it’s not Rachel Zegler.

The live action adaptation of Disney’s iconic 1937 animation has been banned in Lebanon due to the casting of Gal Gadot, who portrayed the Evil Queen. The ban on the Israeli actress reportedly came from the country’s Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar on the heels of Israel’s ongoing attacks on Hezbollah, which has resulted in over 70 civilian deaths.

However, a representative for Beirut-based Middle East distributor Italia Films – which handles the distribution of Disney films in the region – said that Gadot has always been on Lebanon’s Israel boycott list. As a result, none of her movies has ever been released in the country.

The 39-year-old actress is a prominent supporter of her home country, no surprise there. It is widely known that Gadot served in the Israel Defense Forces prior to becoming an actress. She became particularly more vocal after the Hamas attack on an Israeli settlement on October 7, 2023.

“I stand with Israel. You should too. The world cannot sit on the fence when these horrific acts of terror are happening!” she wrote on Instagram at the time.

With the geopolitical intricacy surrounding the Israel-Palestine war, Gadot’s alliance with Israel has landed the actress in hot water with a huge swath of the public. It intensified with Snow White as her co-star Zegler publicly voiced her support for Palestine. This puts the two actresses in awkward positions, so much so that they barely appear together during the film’s promotion despite insider claims that they “got along well.”
