Ahead of its Cannes debut next month, offbeat auteur Wes Anderson just released a trailer for his upcoming film, The Phoenician Scheme. The crime caper comedy features Anderson’s signature aesthetic and a star-studded cast that include Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Imad Mardnli and Benedict Cumberbatch.
The script is written by Anderson from a story by his frequent collaborator, Roman Coppola. The plot revolves around a dysfunctional father-daughter tandem running a family business. The logline reads as follows:
“Wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda appoints his only daughter, a nun, as sole heir to his estate. As Korda embarks on a new enterprise, they soon become the target of scheming tycoons, foreign terrorists and determined assassins.”
The Phoenician Scheme will premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The film is vying for the prestigious Palme D’Or with a veritable roster that include Richard Linklater’s Paris-shot Nouvelle Vague, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, and Titane Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau’s follow-up feature Alpha.
