Willie Nelson has released a new rendition of The Flaming Lips’ iconic track “Do You Realize??” as part of his forthcoming album Last Leaf on the Tree. You can stream the cover below.

Nelson’s version takes a more grounded approach than the original, incorporating piano, harmonica, acoustic guitar, and his signature stark vocals.

The song gains additional depth, considering that Nelson’s son, Micah Nelson, produced the album with the overarching theme of “facing death with grace.”

Lines such as “Instead of saying all of your goodbyes, let them know/ You realize that life goes fast” resonate with this theme.

Originally released by The Flaming Lips in 2002, “Do You Realize??” was the lead single from their acclaimed album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The band is currently on tour with Weezer.

Willie Nelson’s Last Leaf on the Tree is set for release on November 1st and will also include his rendition of Tom Waits’ “Last Leaf.” Pre-orders for vinyl and CD editions are now available.

Nelson has a few remaining shows in 2024, including the final stop of the Outlaw Music Festival on September 20th and a performance at this year’s Farm Aid concert alongside Neil Young, Dave Matthews, and Mavis Staples. Tickets for his shows can be purchased now.
